With the TDM 900 of 2002, Yamaha does not simply update the TDM 850: it redesigns it almost entirely. The engine is an 897cc parallel twin with twin overhead camshafts, five valves per cylinder and liquid cooling, but compared to its predecessor almost everything else changes — electronic fuel injection in place of carburettors, 270-degree firing intervals that give the power delivery an irregular and muscular pulse that no four-cylinder can replicate, and three-way catalytic converters integrated into the new stainless steel exhaust system. The frame abandons steel for aluminium, gaining 29% in stiffness at lower weight. The result is a sport-tourer that brings to completion the crossover concept started by the 850: 86hp and 89Nm available on a bike that handles city traffic as naturally as it takes on a mountain pass. The products in this category are sports exhausts designed to replace the two original end cans on the TDM 900. The work concerns the right and left lateral silencers only: the original headers and the front section of the exhaust system remain in place. Fitting is carried out on the bike's original mounting points with no special adapters required, and each pair of exhausts is supplied with a complete fitting kit. To ensure a proper seal and correct alignment on both sides, we recommend having the installation carried out by a qualified mechanic.

The weight saving over the original end cans is noticeable on both sides and translates into an overall reduction in the weight of the bike. In terms of sound, the TDM 900's 270-degree parallel twin — already pulsating and characterful, somewhere between a British twin and a single-cylinder enduro engine — gains a more open and defined note with the two sports exhausts, with a richer tone that further enhances that irregular pulse at low and mid revs. In terms of behaviour, a different management of exhaust gas flow can favour a more direct throttle response and, in certain riding conditions, a greater feeling of mid-range engine readiness.

Two sleeve lengths are available for this category: 285 mm and 400 mm. The difference is primarily aesthetic and relates to lateral bulk, allowing you to find the visual proportions that best suit your bike. The choice applies to both silencers, which are always supplied as a matching pair. Both versions share the same construction characteristics.

The original TDM 900 is fitted with three-way catalytic converters integrated into the exhaust system. Our sports exhausts for this model are available with or without catalytic converter: those who want to maintain emissions compliance and preserve the behaviour of the lambda sensor can choose the catalysed version; those who prefer to prioritise weight reduction and a more open sound can opt for the version without. The choice is made directly on the product page. Every pair of sports exhausts is supplied with standard dB killers included in both silencers. Our exhausts are homologated for road use throughout Europe and Switzerland: the homologation certificate is included and is valid with both dB killers fitted. Removing the dB killers invalidates the product's homologation. For those who want to reduce the sound level further, the No-Noise option is available, with an internally welded filter in both silencers that provides a perceptible reduction in decibels without significantly affecting the exhausts' overall behaviour. As this involves replacing only the end cans on a fuel-injected bike like the TDM 900, no ECU remapping or modifications to the engine management are normally required. The engine management adapts to the new configuration without any particular electronic issues.
