In the mid-1980s Yamaha set itself an objective that no manufacturer had yet translated into a production motorcycle: building a bike capable of handling both narrow, rough alpine roads and long stretches of open asphalt with equal ease. The result arrived in 1991 with the TDM 850, a 849cc parallel twin with liquid cooling, twin overhead camshafts and — the technical detail that defines its character — five valves per cylinder, a solution borrowed from Yamaha's supersports lineup to improve engine breathing across the entire rev range. With 78hp at 7,500rpm and 79Nm of torque already available at 6,000, the TDM proves more versatile than its category might suggest: responsive at low revs for tight roads, capable at mid-range for touring, with a compact and direct sound that the twin Mikuni carburettors bring out naturally. A sports exhaust on this bike is not simply an aesthetic upgrade — it is a way of giving the engine a voice more faithful to its true character. You can find the full range in the dedicated section for exhausts for Yamaha on our website.
The products in this category are sports exhausts designed to replace the original muffler on the TDM 850. The work concerns the lateral end can only: the original headers and the front section of the exhaust system remain in place. Fitting is carried out on the bike's original mounting points with no special adapters required, and each exhaust is supplied with a complete fitting kit. To ensure a proper seal and correct alignment, we recommend having the installation carried out by a qualified mechanic.
The weight saving over the stock muffler is tangible and noticeable across the whole bike. In terms of sound, the TDM's parallel twin — already compact and direct-voiced — gains a more open and defined note with a sports exhaust, with a richer tone that brings out the mid-range response in particular, the rev range where this bike expresses its character best. In terms of behaviour, a different management of exhaust gas flow can favour a more responsive throttle and, in certain riding conditions, a greater feeling of engine readiness.
Two sleeve lengths are available for this category: 285 mm and 400 mm. The difference is primarily aesthetic and relates to lateral bulk, allowing you to find the visual proportions that best suit your bike. Both versions share the same construction characteristics.
We build every exhaust in our workshop with handcrafted manufacturing in Lombardy, in the province of Bergamo. Each piece is made to order and goes through internal quality control before dispatch. We operate direct from the manufacturer, without intermediaries: a direct relationship that allows us to maintain consistent quality standards and give every order the attention it deserves.
Every sports exhaust is supplied with a standard dB killer included. Our exhausts are homologated for road use throughout Europe and Switzerland: the homologation certificate is included and is valid with the dB killer fitted. Removing the dB killer invalidates the product's homologation. For those who want to reduce the sound level further, the No-Noise option is available, with an internally welded filter that provides a perceptible reduction in decibels without significantly affecting the exhaust's overall behaviour. The selection is made directly on the product page.
As this involves replacing only the end can on a carburetted bike like the TDM 850, no modifications to the carburetion or fuelling system are normally required. The bike adapts to the new configuration without any particular issues.
Updated production times are visible directly at checkout and may vary depending on the period. Once your order has been dispatched, you will automatically receive a tracking code to follow your parcel.
For any questions about fitting, compatibility or the differences between the available models, check our FAQ section or contact us via the Contact page or chat: we respond directly and without unnecessary delays.
Below you will find the product list available for the Yamaha TDM 850. The differences between the various sports exhausts are primarily aesthetic: body shape, material and finish. On each product page you can select the sleeve length (285 mm or 400 mm) and, if desired, the No-Noise option. Visit the product page to view detailed photos, read the technical specifications and configure your exhaust.
